A new survey conducted by the
International Organization for Standardization (ISO), suggests that US-based organizations have seen a 78% year-on-year increase in the number of certifications to the international standard for information security, ISO 27001.
The
ISO Survey reveals that US-based organizations had a significant increase in ISO 27001 certifications from 814 in 2014 to 1,445 in 2015.
Alan Calder, the founder and chief executive office of IT Governance, said: “We’re pleased to see that more US-based organizations recognize the benefits of implementing ISO 27001. These statistics prove that organizations rely on implementing an information security management system (ISMS) to gain competitive advantage in the market place, meet supply-chain demands and prevent ongoing and evolving cyber threats.”
ISO 27001 is the globally recognised framework for an ISMS. The Standard provides guidance on the appropriate controls organizations need to have in place to identify and prevent the risks associated with cyber threats and data breaches.
Moreover, the report shows a record increase in the number of certifications to ISO 27001 in North America since 2008, where an increase of 89% was reported from the previous year.
The countries leading the way with the highest number of ISO 27001 certifications in 2015 were Japan with 8,240 certifications, followed by the United Kingdom with 2,790 and India with 2,490. The United States took fifth place with 1,247 certifications. The considerably larger number of certifications in Japan is the result of privacy laws which mandate that organizations must achieve certification to ISO 27001.
