UConn Health patients facing potential identity theft

In addition to health issues, UConn Health patients are now fretting over their PII (personally identifiable information) being compromised. On December 24, 2018, UConn Health discovered that an unauthorized party had accessed nearly 1,500 employee email accounts.

Breach at UConn Health

According to the organization, it “determined that the accounts contained some personal information, including some individuals’ names, dates of birth, addresses and limited medical information, such as billing and appointment information. The accounts also contained the Social Security numbers of some individuals.”

Although only 1,500 emails accounts were breached, it is possible that more than 326,000 people were impacted. UConn Health says it is not aware of any identity theft or fraud, but cannot isolate data that may have been viewed. Therefore, it notified law enforcement, hired a forensic security firm to investigate, and informed people who may have been impacted.
