The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a blizzard warning from New Jersey to Maine, and with potentially the biggest storm on record hitting the East Coast, and two to three feet of snow expected overnight, a state of emergency has been declared in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio warned:
“This will most likely be one of the largest blizzards in the history of New York City… This is not going to be like other snowstorms. It is going to be, by all indications, worse. And people have to be ready… Recognize this as an emergency. It is not business as usual.”
The vast snowstorm is causing unprecedented disruption down a 250-mile stretch of the East Coast, with driving banned in New York City, New Jersey, and Connecticut, flights cancelled, subway services closed, and businesses forced to stop operating.
Organizations that haven’t planned for emergencies will be hit hard.
The importance of planning
The authorities have clearly prepared for this incident and were ready to instigate their emergency plans, but what can businesses do?
While it’s impossible to completely mitigate freak weather such as this, a best-practice business continuity management system (BCMS) will enable enterprises to get back to business as usual as quickly as possible after such an incident, and limit the long-term damage it inflicts.
ISO 22301 is the international standard that specifies the requirements of a BCMS, which can be implemented by any organization – whatever its size, sector or location. Deploying an ISO 22301-compliant BCMS will allow your organization to demonstrate to its stakeholders (e.g. employees, customers, suppliers, shareholders) that it is prepared for disruptive incidents that could otherwise prevent it from achieving its organizational goals.
