According to a recent study from online IT community Spiceworks, more than 20% of US organizations have not made any plans in preparation for the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which will be enforced on May 25, 2018.
Only 2% of US organizations said that they are already fully prepared for the GDPR.
The report also highlighted a knowledge gap in the US surrounding the GDPR. 27% of US organizations’ top concerns are that the steps to comply with the GDPR are not clear, and 24% said that their management does not understand the impact of the GDPR.
Organizations are running out of time to comply
Every US organization that processes or shares EU residents’ personal data has only a short time left to comply with the Regulation.
The GDPR requires organizations to not only comply with the requirements but to also demonstrate their compliance.
Ignoring the GDPR or getting compliance wrong could have costly repercussions: organizations found in breach of the Regulation can expect administrative fines of up to 4% of annual global turnover or US$21.3 million (€20 million) – whichever is greater.
