Fixing vulnerabilities in web applications

Organizations are increasingly using emerging technologies such as the Internet of things (IoT) and virtual assistants alongside more traditional mobile and web applications to provide unique customer experiences. These emerging technologies are changing the way we conduct our business and personal lives.

However, the vulnerability of these applications is a concern.

The importance of web application security for organizations was recently highlighted by F5 Labs, which examined 433 data breach cases (338 confirmed) and concluded that 86% originated from an application or identity attack. According to F5 Labs, these data breaches are the result of a combination of visibility, logging, monitoring and alerting, and communications failures.

Of the confirmed 338 breached data cases:

  • 11.8 billion records were compromised
  • 10.3 billion usernames, passwords, and email accounts were breached – this equals 1.36 records per person on the planet, or 32 records per US citizens
  • More worryingly, 280 million Social Security numbers were breached,  equaling 86.5% of the US population

Through data breaches, attackers can collect enough information to be able to impersonate an individual and answer their confidential security questions without ever having to work through the impacted party.

Dating and adult sites in particular are prime targets because they contain the most deeply personal information about individuals.

Penetration testing

Penetration testing is an effective method of determining the security of your networks and web applications and helps your organization identify the best way of protecting its assets. The process of penetration testing involves assessing your chosen systems for any potential weaknesses that could result from poor or improper system configuration, known and unknown hardware or software flaws, and operational weaknesses in process or technical countermeasures. To find out how penetration testing services can be improved, IT Governance USA invites you to participate in a web applications penetration testing survey. The survey will take approximately five minutes to complete.

Participants will be entered into our prize draw to win a $300 Apple Apps and iTunes Gift Card.

They will also be given access to the research report and webinar.
