The Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP) – a state authority created by the Virginia General Assembly to cultivate new business investment, foster international trade growth, and encourage the expansion of existing Virginia businesses – has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Australian state of Victoria that will allow the two states to share research on cyber crime and online privacy.
Virginia has the second highest concentration of cyber security jobs outside Silicon Valley.
“…cyber security industry is growing”
Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe said: “I commend the Government of Victoria and VEDP for their hard work in forming this excellent partnership, and we will continue to seek new, innovative international partnerships to build and diversify the new Virginia economy.”
The Premier of Victoria, Daniel Andrews, said: “Our cyber security industry is growing at a phenomenal rate, with our companies outnumbering every other state – and partnering with another world leader will be invaluable to the local industry.”
The MoU follows a deal the US signed with Australia in January to strengthen international cooperation on cyber incident response and tackling cyber crime. President Obama and Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull announced an annual Cyber Security Dialogue between the US and Australia, which would be jointly convened by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute and the US Center for Strategic and International Studies.
The importance of international collaboration on cyber crime issues shouldn’t be underestimated. Cyber crime is a global phenomenon, and sharing information and resources is vital to tackling the problem head-on. With international data transfers and the use of Cloud solutions increasingly common to all types of business, this includes finding a common approach to information security.
