873,488 unique phishing attacks reported since January 2016

According to the APWG’s Phishing Activity Trends Report, 873,488 unique phishing email campaigns were reported in the first semester of 2016. While 2016 started with the largest volume of phishing reports ever tracked before (557,964), this figure has dropped significantly in Q2, for a total of 315,524 from April to June.

These phishing campaigns targeted an average of 418 companies per month, mostly in the retail/service (43%) and financial (16%) industries.

Seagate Technology, FACC, Leoni AG, and Snapchat are just a few companies targeted by phishing attacks that managed to fool inattentive staff into revealing sensitive information and make wire transfers to cyber criminals. Well-crafted phishing campaigns often get through email filters: The ultimate defense is your staff. The more they know how to recognize such threats, the lower the risk of your company suffering a data breach.
